A few weeks later, on her way back from lunch, Gina visited the news department in search of Roz. The open-plan floor was badly lit, windows were too high and there were draughts blowing a gale through the room on winter nights.

A telex machine chattered at each end of the room, television blared in one corner, a radio in another, telephones rang, computers and typewriters buzzed and clattered, reporters shouted at each other above the din—the noise was deafening, and yet now that they were going to move to modern premises the reporters, who had complained for years about the place, were all melancholy over the thought of leaving it.
